Kununurra is widely known as the ‘gateway to East Kimberley’. It is the perfect base to discover some of Australia’s most remarkable natural attractions such as the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park and the beehive-shaped Bungle Bungle Range. However, people often use Kununurra as just a starting point and miss the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in to this outback town.
If you’re planning on visiting the Kimberley in 2025, here are a few reasons why Kununurra should be on your bucket list!
Reason 1 – Big water
According to the Mirima Language Centre, the name Kununurra is based on the Miriwoong word ‘Goonoonoorrang’, meaning big water.
Once you have visited, you will understand why there has never been a more apt name for a town! Kununurra is surrounded by water. The vast Lake Argyle, the magnificent Ord River and the many gorges and waterfalls are just waiting to be explored.
Reason 2 – Freshwater Apartments
If there is one place to stay in Kununurra, it is Freshwater East Kimberley Apartments. Located amongst lush tropical gardens, Freshwater provides the ideal relaxing environment for your stay in Kununurra. The fully self-contained apartments with modern fittings and décor, large balconies and resort-style pool will allow you to experience life in the beautiful Kimberley climate.
Spend your day exploring the area and then come home to Freshwater East Kimberley Apartments to refresh and recoup for your next adventure!
Reason 3 – Gateway to the Kimberley
As we mentioned at the top of the post, Kununurra is known for being the ‘gateway to the Kimberley’. It’s the epicentre for all things tourism, with scenic flights, boating trips, 4WD tours and indigenous cultural tours being just some of the activities you can do. Why not take a look at the sample itineraries that Kimberley Experiences have put together to see what’s on offer.
It’s also the place to stock up groceries and supplies if you’re doing a self-drive adventure.
Reason 4 – Diamonds are forever
Have you ever heard of the elusive Argyle pink diamond? Highly sought after by collectors and diamond connoisseurs, these stunning stones once came from the local Argyle Diamond Mine. The mine played a large role in the Kununurra community, with support and sponsorship of various East Kimberley events. The mine has stopped production however we always include incredible views of the decommissioned mine on Scenic Flights to the Bungle Bungle in Purnululu National Park. Whilst you can no longer purchase up a coveted pink diamond directly from the mine, the wonderful diamond and jewelry stores in Kununurra can still indulge your diamond desires. Visit Kimberley Fine Diamonds and Ninas on your visit to Kununurra. Leave your husband at the hotel.
Reason 5 – Ord Valley Muster
Mark your diaries for the 2025 Boab Metals Ord Valley Muster – Friday 16th May to Saturday 24th May, an event not to be missed during the Kimberley tourist season. Spread over 9 days, this annual festival features over 30 events such as a rodeo, comedy nights, cultural performances, floating yoga boats and the highlight of the muster, the Kimberley Moon Experience.
The Kimberley Moon Experience is the ultimate party in the Kimberley with the 2025 headlining acts soon to be announced.
